"Approaching the Milky Way"

Jon Lomberg was chief artist for Carl Sagan's television series "Cosmos." Lomberg designed most of the animation sequences, including the long trip through the universe that opened the series. This is a scene from that animation, in which the traveler approaches the Milky Way Galaxy, just before diving down into the disc and flying to Earth.




"Starseeds"

Young stars burst forth from a nebula, like seeds spreading through a galaxy, seeds that may someday become oases of life. This painting was the origin of the dandelion metaphor used throughout Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" television series. This original artwork is available for purchase.






"Backbone of Night"

The !Kung people of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana describe the Milky Way as the "backbone of night." Jon Lomberg painted this image at the suggestion of Carl Sagan, who later used the image as the title graphic for an episode of the television ser ies "Cosmos."





"Contact"

Artist Jon Lomberg painted this image for the cover of Contact, the novel by Carl Sagan. It shows the night side of Earth--the lights of the Americas are visible--seen against the backdrop of the Milky Way Galaxy.





"Galaxy"
This realistic and cartographically accurate painting of the Milky Way was created for the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The artist worked with astonomers Jeff Goldstein at the Laboratory of Astrophysics and Leo Blitz of the University of Maryland in mapping about 300 of our home galaxy's actual star clusters and nebu lae in their real positions in the galaxy's spiral arms. Our Solar System is located far from the galactic center in the "Orion Spur" (at a point near the center of the painting,where lines connecting diagonally opposite corners cross).
