My sympathy to Mr Sagan's relatives and friends. Carl Sagan's Cosmos has been an inspiration for me for over a decade. I particularly liked this anecdote about him visiting a library as a child and asking for a book on "stars" ... So, here's another star among "billions and billions" of other stars, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Gregory Bateson, Sigmund Freud, Alan Turing, Eleanor Roosevelt, Picasso, Howard Carter, Henri Laborit to name but a very few.

Dear L Yurga

I am a professional astronomer, age 32. It was unfortunately fashionable among astronomers for a time in the 1980s to brush off Dr. Sagan as "not doing hard science anymore" or to accuse him of self-aggrandizement. But there are many astronomers of my generation who were inspired as kids by Carl Sagan, who wouldn't even BE astronomers if it weren't for him. He did more for our field and for science as a whole than anyone else. We can only hope that another eloquent champion of science comes along to take his place.

Sincerely

Subject: Hero and Inspriation

Carl Sagan's passing is a sad one for me. My sole goal for most of High School was to get into Cornell, so that Dr. Sagan could be my instructor. He was already my hero.

I did end up with a degree in Astrophysics, know more about Astronomy and Exobiology than most people I meet, and do a pretty excellent imitation of Carl Sagan on The Tonite Show.

A Computer Engineer now, I still follow the stars. My being in the sciences at all was due to Dr. Sagan, and my computer training while studying is why I now am employed in the computer industry.

The only consolation I can find is that Dr. Sagan was aware of the recent "Life on Mars" hoopla, and that he knew of the thousands like me who will continue to find his work and life an inspiration.

I first saw Carl Sagan in the very early 70's. During the summer between third and fourth grade I took an astronomy course for children at our planetarium in Oklahoma City. The instructor ran a 16mm black and white film of a young Dr. Sagan teaching astronomy from a dark set with hanging models of the planets. The short film was fascinating. Years later, when Cosmos came out, I felt as if I already knew him as a friend.

I've followed Dr. Sagan for a long time and will miss him greatly.

I don't think so. Every time we look into the heavens, we have a bit of Sagan that looks with us.

COSMOS peeked my interest in astronomy...and though I did not choose it as a career, I still have an interest in the stars.

Yes, he will be missed by all of us. But, and I am paraphrasing, he said that "We are all made up of parts of the universe"...and so, Carl is now part of all of us.

God bless his family and the space exploration community.

STATEMENT BY NASA ADMINISTRATOR DAN GOLDIN - December 20, 1996

NASA NEWS RELEASE: 96-266

"All of us at NASA are saddened by the passing of Carl Sagan. For more than three decades, Dr. Sagan was an eloquent, passionate voice for the sciences that he so ably advanced. As much as any scientific figure of our time, Carl described for an entire generation - the generation of the Space Age - the true wonders of the Universe around us. His unbelievable ability to explain the complexities of space and space exploration inspired people to look up into the night sky in wonder. Through such efforts as the television series 'Cosmos' and his recent book, 'Pale Blue Dot,' Carl reached - and touched - millions around the world.

He was a pioneer of the idea that life could exist on Mars, years before NASA was able to uncover evidence of potential early life on the Red Planet, and he was an important voice in our Mars science programs for many years. He was an early champion of the idea that the two leading spacefaring powers, America and Russia, should work together in the exploration of space.

He also was at the forefront of constructing humanity's first messages to the stars, which even now are hurtling out of our Solar System aboard the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft. Carl himself likened the effort to the launching of a message in a bottle on the interstellar ocean. We will remember his vision, his eloquence, and his intellect, and we will miss him."

KOSMOS - Kisisel bir yazi

Quebec-Kanada. Kasim 1980.

COSMOS
A Personal Voyage

Kisisel yolculugum baslamisti.

Ilk olarak, "Kosmos" kelimesinin "Kaos"un zit anlamlisi oldugunu ogrendim. Dizi, tabiatin o muhtesem düzeni icinde insanoglunun yerini sorguluyordu. Dr. Sagan asirlar boyunca süregelen Kosmos'u anlayabilme cabalarini incelemeye calisti.

Sonucta, gunluk olaylara bilimin penceresinden bakmayi ogrendim. Bilim meslek hayatimdan cikip gunluk hayatimin icine girdi. Belki de ikisinin arasindaki cizgiyi sildi. Cunku, Bilim eglenceliydi. En sikintili oldugunuz anda, basit bir soru isaretine binip, ucsuz bucaksiz bilgi denizlerinde macera kovalamak her zaman mumkundu. Bu sessiz yolculukta eksik bilgiye ulastiginiz zaman zafer kazanmis komutan edasiyla sevinmek, keza basarisizliklarda gemisi batan kaptan benzeri yilginliga dusmek ne kadar olaganustu idi. Hele günümüzün Internet dünyasinda.

Bilim gizemliydi.

Bilim huzur vericiydi. Descartes süpheciliginden hareketle her zaman tekrarlanabilir sonuclara varmaya gerektiren bilimsel yontem, günümüzün gittikce güvensizlesen yasam ortaminda her zaman beni rahatlatti, stresimi azaltti. Benim icin onemli olan, her alanda objektif varsayimlara dayanarak gercekleri yakalamaya calismakti. Gerisini hic kafama takmadim.

Dr. Sagan'in kisisel yolculugu dün sabah sona erdi. O bir isik yakti, yol gosterdi. Gunumuzde nereye gidecegini bilemiyerek kaos'a dusenlere atfen bu yaziyi yazdim. Tamamen kisisel olarak.

Thank you, Dr, Sagan, for enlightening me to the wonders and beauty of the universe, and inspiring me to explore them myself. Your contributions to many, many people will live on long after you have gone. You have, and always will, be like a candle illuminating the dark void of ignorance and superstition. I especially loved your theoretical worlds and life forms - truly inspiring!

Carl Sagan opened my eyes, and put my feet upon the path to knowledge and I know he did that for countless others. Some people deserve to live forever, not for themselves, but for the rest of us who need them so badly. The stars have Professor Sagan now, but not only does he make the night sky brighter, he also brought illumination to our little planet. Humanity has lost a priceless treasure, and my heartfelt condolences to his family --- and that includes all of us.

We are terribly saddened for the world's loss of such a great man. The world today is a less desirable place to live in due to the loss of such an inspirational and dedicated soul. He can never be replaced but it is our sincere hope that someone will pick up his torch and carry it onward for the sake of hummanity. Carl's dedication and humanitarinism will be greatly missed. He profoundly touched more lives than anyone can imagine. May God grant him peace and comfort and comfort all those touched by h is passing.

You have inspired many and brought new life into a misunderstood and little known area of science. Your thoughts and views about religion have angered many and confused others. You are truly scientist. As we enter into an amazing time for mankind, I want to say thanks for showing us the way. May your teachings and ideas inspire many more like you.

Shine on you Crazy Diamond...

Thank you for the nice page dedicated to Carl Sagan.

He was one of my favorite scientists and instrumental in sparking my interest in astronomy when i was younger. I LOVED the Cosmos series, and read his works often. It was a sad day to hear of his death.

Thank you

Dear Michael Rapp,
I was deeply saddened by the passing of Carl Sagan. I have been a great fan of his for over twenty years. When I was 14 my family moved to Malta from New York and as teenager on the island of Malta I was a member of a local student astronomical society known as the Students Astronomical Circle (SAC). I was always interested in Astronomy and Space from a very early age. The very first public lecture I ever gave as a memember of the SAC was entitled "The Search for Extraterrestrial Civilizations" a title i nspired by a book by the late Isaac Asimov. I did a tremendous amount of research for that public presentation, and one of my major sources was Carl Sagan. I used to have a habit of constantly quoating him. I remember that with out me realizing it I spoke for three hours straight, and I covered such topics as the origin of life on Earth, the rise of human intelligence, the evolution of human culture, planetary and stellar evolution, and the methods for searching for technological civilizations. Themes that Carl inspired in me. That lecture went off very well. In the January of 1984 I had the opportunity to view that landmark television series COSMOS when it aired on Maltese public television for the first time. I remember audio taping all 13 episodes. In the summer of 1984 I returned to the United States in order to study Physics and Astronomy.

Today I am a high school physics teacher at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. A school located in Spanish Harlem. The vast majority of my students are economically disadvantaged. I have always used the themes of Space Exploration and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence to inspire in my students an interest and love of science. Next year I hope to begin my studies towards a Masters degree in Space Studies. I hope one day to write books on science and technology and the future of humanity for the general public.

I will be adding a link to your web site on my web page this weekend. Something I have been meaning to do for a while now. I will also be dedicating my Mars site to Carl Sagan's memory. I have also been thinking of creating my own web site devoted to Carl Sagan. Now I guess this is as good as time ever. As of yet though this is out of the question since I do not have any illustrative material for this page. But, where there is a will there is always a way. In closing please let me just say that I share your feelings over Carl Sagan's passing. This has added a very sour note for me in this holiday season. Please continue the great work on your page, and keep his memory alive.

Yours truly,
Alex Michael Bonnici

Dear Levent,

Here is a message I sent today to Michael Rapp over in Texas. To answer your question of what is there left for us to do in the light of Carl Sagan's passing I believe we should continue in the task of educating the general public about science, technology, Space exploration, and the promising and glorous future that await the human species. What better way is there to honor his memory?
Yours always
Alex Michael Bonnici
